The Golden Temple in Amrtisar is one of the most magical places I've ever been to. It's a Gurdwara and is considered to be the holiest place for the Sikhs. I spent many hours there, over the course of several days, just walking around, sitting quietly and taking it all in. The sight is stunning but what makes it so magical is the vibe one feels from all of the prayers of the pilgrims. Even an outsider like me - foreigner, atheist - feels welcomed with open arms.
Visually speaking, what was most striking about the site was its transformation as the sun moved across the sky. The pictures below don't do it justice, but you can still get a bit of a sense for how different the temple looks in the morning vs. mid-day vs. afternoon vs. evening vs. night.
Of all the religious sites in India that I visited on this trip (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain, Jewish), this one had the most profound effect on me.
To find the entrance, just follow the pilgrims
